A Second Look
by Steve Rogers on Wed, 9 May 2012 02:53

They let him have his own apartment after the incident. It was still near the S.H.I.E.L.D. facility though. Although they had seen him in action when Loki had terrorized New York, (nothing new there) he knew that a part of them wanted to keep an eye on him. He wasn't sure if his apartment was rigged with any of those really small movie capturing things, but he wasn't going to bet ten bucks against it. With S.H.I.E.L.D., he knew that tended to work out poorly for him.

His apartment was small and cozy. They kept showing him rather large places, but to be honest, Steve wanted something closer to home. Closer to how he had grown up. The building was old, and so was the wallpaper. Still not his style, but it was better than Tony Stark's penthouse. He was entirely afraid to touch anything in there.
He had a collection of vintage sets like a TV, a radio, and some newspapers that S.H.I.E.L.D reprinted from the forties. He had quite a bit of catching up to do. That was one benefit for sticking around though. You got everything you needed and more.

He looked out the small dirty window and sighed. He had been inside for awhile, and he was still timid to go out into the city...it was still overwhelming for him.
But nonetheless he got dressed in a hoodie, and a shirt. He was hoping no one would recognize him...he was thinking they wouldn't. He wasn't exactly a public figure like some of the other Avengers were. It felt weird thinking of Fury's team. He was still upset about the weapons detail, but he supposed he could understand his thinking, as flawed as it was. The Hydra incident didn't turn out too well either.
But, at the same time, being an Avenger felt right. He felt like his old self. Or is old-new self. It was familiar, to say the least.

He slipped onto the streets. They were still cleaning up but there wasn't any chaos like there had been months earlier. People were going back to work, slowly but surely, and like he had hoped, no one gave him a second look.

Melissa had gotten up early that morning, nervous. She had a big interview... meeting late that afternoon and it was driving her crazy waiting for it. She had no idea what S.H.I.E.L.D wanted with her but they had pretty much pressured her into saying yes to the meeting... And she was trying really hard not to go crazy over it.

After three cups of coffee and a bowl of cereal, she had to just get out of her apartment. She had already dressed for the interview, in a nice khaki, knee-length skirt and a white blouse. She wore a soft green tank top under it and left the top button undone, and had the sleeves rolled up to her elbows. She quickly pulled on her light green sandals with the short heel, and grabbed her keys, slipping out of her place.

Melissa walked down the street, gently wiping her hands on her skirt at her hips, trying to forget about being so nervous. She slipped through a back alley and down a larger street, heading for the park. It had gotten pretty torn up in the attack a few months back, but she still just felt better there.
She skirted the construction line and sat down on the bench near the entrance, close to the street still. She tapped her toes on the concrete under the bench though, the change of scenery not helping like she wanted it to.
After a little while though, a little sparrow flitted down and landed on the back of the bench, hopping towards her curiously. Melissa glanced over and smiled a little, turning on the bench a little to watch it. It hopped closer and looked at her intently.

Steve wasn't used to all the traffic to be honest. He had to navigate around and make mental notes of the street signs in order to find his way back home. He had been told to carry a business card of his building, just incase he had to call a cab.
Although he'd sooner get hit by one then hail one.
He stumbled into the sidewalk near the park after managing to get across the road. Not without nearly causing an accident though. He shirked his shoulders as there was a barrage of yelling and honking at him and he looked around, already exhausted. But at least this was a nice place...the park that was.

Melissa glanced up at the sound of screeching tires and shouting. The bird flitted away. She quickly got up and walked over to the man that had stumbled into the park. "Hey are you alright?" she asked.

Steve looked around before turning to her and smiled. "Yeah just..." He shifted a little. "I guess it was just bad timing." He said shoving a hand into his pocket and holding out his hand. "Hey, I'm Steve." He said easily.

Melissa smiled a little and gently shook his hand. "Melissa," she said quietly. She blinked, trying not show much as a wave of uncertainty hit her. She looked up at him, her blue eyes bright, trying to figure out... why that emotion was so strong in him.

Steve smiled crookedly and looked around. "Big city around here huh?" He asked, licking his lips. "You know of...anywhere I could get a cheap burger or something? I don't really have alotta lettuce on me."

Melissa slowly smiled at him. He was really handsome... but besides that he was... kind of sweet. And she could already he was a good guy. That was one of the best things about her powers, she always knew when she could trust someone. Or not.
"Um yeah," she said, still smiling. "Actually there's a nice diner just down the street." She checked the time on the slender watch on her wrist, but then smiled at him again.

"Oh really, well, would you mind showing me Miss Melissa? I'm afraid I might get hit by a bus if I try to brave the roads again." He laughed a little and nodded, shoving his hands into his pockets. He was rather bashful.

Melissa couldn't help but laugh a little as he called her 'miss'. But she nodded, the soft waves of her hair falling over her shoulders. "Yeah," she said softly. "I can walk with you." She smiled at him, walking across the park with him. "So are you new to the city?"

Steve thought for a moment. "Well, this city." He said slowly. He glanced over. "Used to live here awhile ago." He swallowed a bit. "Are you from around here?"

Melissa smiled a little and nodded. "Not originally," she said softly. "But... I moved here when I was about sixteen."

Steve smiled a little and nodded. "Wow that must have been quite a move." He said. He kept looking around, overwhelmed by the surroundings. "Where are you from originally?"

Melissa smiled a little, walking down the sidewalk with him. "Iowa, actually," she said softly.

"Really? I've been to Iowa. I owe a lot." He grinned at her and at his pun, pretty proud of himself for thinking of something so clever.
