Melissa laughed a little, shaking her head. At least he made a cute joke. Most guys got excited and asked if she had just gotten off the bus. She stopped at the corner and hit the button for the crosswalk. "So you said you used to live in the city?" she asked, waiting for the light to change. "Were you gone for a long time?"

Steve exhaled. "Longer then I wanted to be." He said looking over and smiling. "But I'm back and things have changed. I'll have to get used to that is all."

Melissa smiled a bit at him and nodded. The light changed and the crosswalk sign beeped and she started across the street with him. The diner was just up ahead. "I'm sure you will," she said softly.

Steve smiled a little and scratched his head. "So what's it like in Iowa?" He asked curiously. "That's a long ways from here."

Melissa smiled a bit and nodded. "Yeah it is," she said quietly. "It's... well a lot quieter, mainly." She smiled at him and walked into the diner with him.

Steve smiled a little. "Its a lot louder here then I remember." He said taking a seat at a booth near the door. He didn't wait to be seated like he was supposed to.

Melissa hesitated for a moment but then slowly followed him to the table. It was a pretty casual place, she doubted they'd mind. But... "Do you mind if I join you?" she asked softly.

Steve looked around and smiled. "No not at all, I apologize to say that I was under the impression that you had already been planning to. Not to assume too much but I suppose it was rather rude of me not to ask anyway."

Melissa smiled at him and shook her head a little, taking the seat across from him. "Well thanks," she said softly. She licked her lips a little and smiled a bit as the waitress came over. She frowned a little, sensing that the girl was a bit peeved that they had seated themselves but then her emotions did a complete turn around.
The waitress didn't say anything about it but she looked to Steve excitedly, eagerly. "Can I get you guys something to drink?" she asked, soundly a little giddy, as if she was holding something back.
Melissa managed to hold back a frown of confusion at the girl's actions and emotions... "Just water, for me, please," she said softly.

"I'll have a coca-cola if you have em? Please." He said easily with a smile. He was terribly worried though that this girl was so excited. She didn't recognize him did she?
He looked down to the menu to hide his face. He frowned though seeing the price of a burger. He remembered when you could get a coke and a burger for twenty cents a pop! Four-five dollars now?

The waitress nodded and walked back to the kitchen. She whispered excitedly to a couple co-workers though.
Melissa watched her for a moment but then turned back to him with a small smile. "So Steve... what is it you do for a living?"

Steve smiled. "Well I used to be in the military." He said slowly, looking to the waitress and he watched the others buzz around. He shifted a bit in his seat.

Melissa raised her eyebrow at that a little and nodded. "Wow," she said softly. "Impressive. Did you go overseas and everything?"

Steve nodded slowly. "Yeah. Germany." He smiled a little and licked his lips. "You know that classic burger looks swell. And it comes with fries too? I think that's what I'll get." He smiled a little, trying to change the subject.

Melissa frowned a little at that. Germany? But she guessed there was a lot the military didn't tell the general public... they might have a base in Germany. She smiled at him and nodded, glancing down to the menu. "That does sound good, actually," she said softly. "I think I'll copy you."
The waitress came over and set their drinks down. "Did you decide what you wanted to order?" she asked. She practically faced Steve, ignoring Melissa's presence.
