Personality Notes: Laelyl is a sadistic psychopath prone to outbursts of violence and cruelty simply because she can. Her nature is extremely chaotic, and frequently Laelyl is just as dangerous to her friends as her enemies, though she can be surprisingly protective and almost generous if the fancy strikes her. She enjoys causing pain in others, simply killing them not enough, and seems to react with perverse delight when she is hurt herself--although many believe this may simply be because it disturbs her would-be tormentor.
Additional Information Laelyl fits the "Disturbing Villain" category very neatly.

She has a voice that could charm angels out of the heavens, and is known for singing to her victims as she cuts them apart.

Laelyl is always seen wearing a pendant with the insignia of a violet flame. People often correctly suppose that this has a religious significance of some kind, though many do not understand the true horror of its meaning--the symbol of Y'chak.
Quotes "He's no fun at all--one hit and he fell right over."

"Very messy bodies, but done with precise cuts. Someone who knows their slabs of walking, talking flesh. With a predilection for hanging flayed and cut up bodies from signposts and trees. Sounds like fun."

"Target...target...why should I show you anything? I didn't ask for your help! You're all the same, the same. I won't let you trick me, me again."

"Do you ever think as a hearse goes by,
that you may be the next to die?
They wrap you up in a big white sheet
from your head down to your feet.
They put you in a big black box,
And cover you up with dirt and rocks..."

"Kitty white so slyly comes
To catch the mousie gray,
But mousie hears the kitty come,
And quickly runs away!
Run, run, you dear little mouse,
Run quickly 'round the house,
For kittycat is catching up,
And she might eat you for her sup!"

Background

Laelyl's origins are sketchy at best--people are generally much more aware of her recent history. The best that's been gleaned about her through decades of diligent research is that she was once a normal, perfectly sane member of drow society. And then something went horribly and utterly wrong.

To put it simply, Laelyl, whatever she was at that time--many speculate a bard due to her voice--was betrayed. Someone close to her, though no one has managed to discover who, pushed her into a portal that left her in a place far worse than any hell--the Far Realm. Laelyl vanished for twenty years, then returned abruptly, plummeting into the Fane of Lolth in her home city half dead and not quite right. Something in her stopped ticking right.

On record, however, is the bloody swath she left through the streets before vanishing, murdering and tormenting as the twisted apparitions of her mind bid her. Since then she has become a kinslayer, hating both other drow and elves with an equal amount of unholy zeal. She contains herself only when she can be persuaded to kill something else instead, and actively goes out of her way to wreak havoc for both races.

Humans and others make the mistake that due to her innocent expression and almost surface-elven characteristics, despite her wholly drow heritage, that she is safe to be around and approach. Needless to say, this is not a mistake they make twice--especially when they encounter her unnatural strength born perhaps of her insanity. Despite her smiles and eyes that glitter like a happy infant's, adventurers and townspeople alike are advised to avoid her at all costs.

Laelyl is slowly regaining her memory thanks to a journal she left with Shaleez before she was thrown into the Far Realm. She has yet to share what the journal tells her, or the nature of the other objects in her box.

"The world is ancient, built upon and beneath the ruins of past empires, legends and artifacts living past them--as well as terrible menaces. Shrouded in a dark age between the collapse of the last great power and the rise of the next, it endures. Minor kingdoms prosper: baronies, holdings, city-states, but the power of kings goes only as far as their riders. Settlements are points of light in the widespread darkness, havens, islands of civilization in the wilderness that covers the world. Magic is everywhere--people believe in and accept the power that magic provides. However, true masters are rare. Many people have access to a little, and it helps those living within the cities to maintain their communities. Surrounding the world, Edion, is the ether or ethereal plane which divides it from the other planes and the great Astral Sea. So welcome. Why not weave a tale or two while you're here?"
